This is one way to guarantee entry to the African American History and Culture Museum, so it is worth the price for that one reason alone (if you've not been able to obtain a timed entry). Otherwise, you could simply spend more time inside the museum on your own. Most of the spots on the official tour are places you can easily visit on your own: Lincoln Memorial, MLK Memorial, and the White House. (note: actually our group unanimously voted to skip the White House to allow more time at the museum). It also briefly stopped at Frederick Douglass' house, which is quite a distance from the Mall. That was well worth seeing. We also drove through Howard University and U Street while the guide discussed African American life in DC on the way. With time, I would hope they would re-structure this tour to allow more time in less popular visited areas. For instance, it would have been nice to stop on U Street at Ben's Chili Bowl, which has a great mural depicting African American culture on the outside wall and has served meals to many notable African Americans like MLK and President Obama.

We were very excited to take this tour. First our guide arrived about 5 minutes before the tour was to start and the shuttle arrived 20 minutes late. Not a great start. Our guide was very knowledgeable, however, spent a fair amount of time promoting his political agenda. He was encouraged by a few guests, while many like myself really wanted to hear more of the history and facts he could have shared. Neither the driver nor the guide planned an alternate route to accommodate the St Patricks parade that resulted in several roads being closed. This caused our already late tour to run even later. The sights and information are wonderful and the museum is a must see. Given the other reviews, I will give the benefit of the doubt that it was just a bad day.

The tour was somewhat off schedule as it is apparently new. Overall, however, it is well arranged and out tour guide very knowledgeable. The Museum was beyond description. Every American should try to go.
