Alaska Railroad Anchorage to Seward One Way

Overview
Departing from downtown Anchorage, the Coastal Classic Train travels south along the rugged coastline of Turnagain Arm, with dramatic views of the Chugach Mountains plunging directly to the sea. At the end of Turnagain Arm, the tracks veer away from the road system into the backcountry wilderness – and what many consider to be the most scenic stretch of the Alaska Railroad, accessible only by train. Watch for views of massive glaciers, steep river canyons, and cascading waterfalls. The train arrives to Seward at 1115 am, allowing plenty of time to explore this charming port town – or opt to take a marine wildlife & glacier day cruise into the nearby Kenai Fjords.

Very nice experience on quite efficient RR. Staff of AR were wonderful. Very cheerful and helpful and made this a very good transit to Seward for two first time travelers to the area.

Our train ride from Anchorage to Seward was quite scenic, we rode along beautiful Alaskan landscapes, ice caped mountains, rivers, glaciers, animals and even a couple of small waterfalls. The narrator on our train was quite vigilant in spotting animals and shared a lot of historical information along the ride. If you’re riding to Seward to catch a cruise then you can checkin your bags at the Anchorage train station for final delivery at your cruise cabin, this worked perfectly for us, what a thoughtful service by train and cruise companies. Don’t forget to bring your printed cruise baggage tags as you’ll need to attach them for checking in your bags direct to cruise cabin. We also liked the free bus service from Seward train station to cruise port and then immediate checkin to cruise ship for lunch. Seward port offers free shuttle service with a stop at cruise port so you should use them post cruise lunch for exploring Seward. Overall we loved the experience of Alaska Train and their joint services with cruise companies, very well done.

The train ride was definitely a highlight of our trip. The scenery is spectacular. We upgraded to the glass dome roof car (the first car) and were really glad we did. It had its own outside viewing platform and that was where we spent a lot of the time. I highly recommend it.
