Even though our travel day was rainy, overcast with low clouds and chilly temperature our spirits soared as we traveled with Alaska Railroad along the class coastal route from Anchorage to Seward. This cruise train wasn't as luxurious as the McKinley Explorer from Denali to Anchorage but still the seats were assigned, comfortable as you sat 4 persons at a table, and looked at the marvelous scenery through large viewing windows. There was a train guide explaining important scenery coming up, wildlife we might see (we saw moose and eagles), differences between Whittier and Seward and history of the train. We also had a waitress who came by to take any orders for food or beverages.
BONUS: Most impressive was the fact our Holland America tour group, who were going to embark on the Noordam for a 7 night cruise to Vancouver, had a Holland America agent on board the train who actually checked us onto our sailing. She had a lap top computer with the embarkation information for each passenger. Our passports and ship boarding passes were examined, credit card info for ship accounts collected, and actual ship key cards issued in advance of arrival to Seward. Therefore, all we needed upon leaving the train was to go through security and xray our hand held carry on luggage and board the ship. Our checked luggage was waiting for us in our cabins! This was an excellent benefit to riding the train with a departure of 12:15pm from Anchorage arriving Seward around 5:45pm. Yes, it was a bit difficult to go to the Lido Buffet, eat supper and then get to your mandatory muster station by 7:45pm but we made it.
