Fantastic views all the way to Anchorage Friendly staff but the commentary was embarrassing The person was reading from a script and had great difficulty in finishing the sentence We were in Gold star but the food was no star We were in the second sitting and the very minimal menu had run out of the food I wanted The dish I had was poor Tasteless and not well cooked at all I think you should go on the Rocky Mountaineer to see how things should be done

Enjoyed the train ride and gold star car. The train interior could be upgraded to match the class advertised and paid for. Spent a lot of time at the back of the train in the open air area taking photos. Was uncomfortable being seated across from strangers for dining due to COVID and hearing multiple people hacking away during the trip. Food was better than expected. Service was a bit slow but they seemed to be short handed and we’re doing their best. Drink servers were friendly and efficient. Narration was embarrassing. Main highlights on the route weren’t announced early and therefore passengers were disappointed to not get photos. A passenger with a $5 pamphlet kept people more informed than the formal announcements. (We were once told to look towards the 12:00 side of the train. What?) Still enjoyed the ride overall. Great scenery, and we saw a couple moose and a bear. Nice to not have someone driving and missing a lot of the views.

I heard so many people rave about this as a must do, but honestly, I was bored out of my mind. I would have MUCH rather driven. If you are not a hiker, perhaps are older, or not as mobile, it would be a great option to seeing the "wild". BUT, if you are a hiker, and actually got out into the park, this will bore you to tears. We did see the butt end of a moose, but that was it. Besides trees. LOTS of trees. I booked Gold Star over 1.5 years ago! Because of COVID, our trip was cancelled last year. When tickets opened back up, we were not able to get Gold again (even a year in advance). I hear they are only selling 1/2 as many tickets. We were in car E, and the rest of our group in D. Honestly, I liked E much more. 1/2 car, more room between seats, much quieter, perhaps 16 seats total, 1/2 occupied? By contrast, D car was randomly scattered people. Maybe 40 or so seats? There were two tables where people can face each other and play cards, or whatever. People seemed to take turns with those. The dining car has to go meals. Sandwiches, corn dogs, pretzels, and crappy looking pizzas. You can get a few mixed drinks at $8 or $9 bucks, which is not bad considering. If you go as soon as the train leaves, you can grab a nicer looking salad or something before they sell out. You can go up to the "domed" area, for 20 min at a time, they say. Even though this train was sold out (remember, Covid sold out), it was still pretty empty if not completely empty most times. It did give a better view, but I just assume sit next to my big window in my seat. There are no chargers at your seat. There is one as soon as you walk up steps in domed area, and you can use the employee station next to E to charge your phone as well. Is Gold Star worth it? Considering the only difference is the constant Domed viewing and full meals....I'd say save the $150 extra. I can't imagine the meal is worth that much. Also, because of Covid, there is no transit train running. So, this train acts as a pick up for "locals" along the route. They can be picked up anywhere along the route. We stopped about 5 or 6 times, making our train arrive 1.5 hours late. Please take this into consideration when booking air travel.
