What To Expect

Alcatraz Island

Once you take the ferry over to Alcatraz Island and you are dropped off, you will make your way up to the main prison building, where you receive an audio headset, and the audio tour will guide you through the Alcatraz Prison. Once the audio tour is over, you can continue taking pictures and exploring the Island, or you can walk back down to the ferry landing and hop on the next ferry headed back to San Francisco. The Alcatraz tour typically takes 2-3 hours to enjoy.

You go to the port and it's really hard to find, because it doesn't exactly say what port it is. There wasn't a tour guide, only a walk through casset guide at the main part of the jail , that guided you. The faire ride took a little while to get to the prison. It was about 30 or so minutes, give or take a few minutes. I would say it was a little pricey, but very fun and interesting. Wait time to pick us up was about 15 to 30 minutes, depending how full the line and shop is. And it takes off shortly after every one is seated and in. It was so pretty, with it's animal life and flowers. It was a little cold there, but nice most of the places at the island were falling apart and crumbling so you couldn't access them. There are two gift shops; one for the upper part where the main part of the prison is and the other is when you first get on the island where the boat drops you off. The bathrooms are across from the gift shop (lower level). There is a guided walking tour you can take in one of the halls. Unfortunately you can't go on the upper levels of the prison, you can only go to the main floor of the main prison. You can see the warden's office, famous prisoners's jail cells, and go inside a few of the jail cells. You can go in were the prisoners had lunch and you can walk down the low parts of the halls.

Easy and quick check in, we were given great bikes with locks and the guide was very informative about the different locations we could visit on top of when to get to the Alcatraz location to beat the lines. You can also split your package and do Alcatraz on your assigned day and the bikes the next day if you please, or do it all in one! Amazing views of San Francisco, would highly recommend to anyone looking for an easy and fun day exploring!
