The Visit-in-Person [VIP] tour offered by the Amish Experience in Bird-in-Hand, PA was WELL worth the price. We went first to a working Amish dairy farm, where we met with the farmer, had a tour of the barn & property, and visited the quilt shop his wife runs. The second stop was at the home of an Amish woman who runs a soap-making business from her home. She demonstrated how she makes soap and other products. The final stop was at the home of another Amish family where the lady of the house just sat and talked with us. We just asked each other questions and spent a while visiting. It was a really great time for anyone who is interested in meeting 'real' Amish people and getting to know them better.

This tour is a chance to get close to members of the Amish Community that a casual visitor would not otherwise have. The tour I took included a Dairy Farm at Milking Time, A Gourd Farm, and a visit to a young family. We spent just short of an hour at each location. The bus driver / tour guide appeared to be fairly knowledgeable concerning Amish Customs; but did not appear to be very knowledgeable about the various community events that we were passing by! The tour did have a problem that detracted from the overall experience. The family chosen for the evening's home visit had notified the scheduling office several days in advance, that they would not be able to accommodate that evening's visit. Unfortunately; for whatever reason their notice was not followed through on and we arrived unexpected! After a brief discussion with the tour guide they agreed to host our visit in spite of their desire not to have visitors that evening. The tour would have been more enjoyable if the tour guide had known something about the various community events that were taking place that day (a Friday) or Saturday that he was taking us past! It also goes without saying that the organizer of the tour should have paid more attention to the details of that particular tour! It was an enjoyable evening never the less!

As part of our visit to Philadelphia we took a tour to Lancaster County utilizing a tour put together by Connective Tours. We took a train round trip from the Philadelphia 30th station to Lancaster where we were picked up and delivered to The Amish Experience facility in Bird in Hand. We did all 3 of the experiences from the movie to the house to the farmlands tour. We also ate lunch in the restaurant (wow - what an incredible lunch). This was highly educational and informative. I don't know how anyone wouldn't find it fascinating. The only negative was the Philly Trolley Works pickup part - they were 35 minnutes late picking us up from the hotel after 2 phone calls with no explanation or concern or apology. We never waited for them at the return to the train station and just took a taxi back to the hotel as we felt we could not count on them actually coming. Connective Tours needs to find another transfer agent.
