We just returned home from our 5-day trip to Colorado, and my son (age 8) has declared the Argo Gold Mine Tour his most favorite part of our trip! When I asked him why, he said, "The tour guide [Will] was funny, and the stories he told about the mill were super-duper interesting! Also, I really liked seeing all the great machines!" My daughter (age 5) said, "I loved getting real gold!" as we enjoyed panning for gold together after the tour. Personally, I liked that we didn't spend much time inside of a mountain mine (no need to bring a coat!), instead we were mostly in the mill learning how gold was extracted from the rocks that came out of the mine -- which was an INCREDIBLE production process. I have newfound respect for industrial revolution era miners!

Based on the reviews posted here, we expected the Argo Mill tour to be a great activity for our gem- and rock-loving kids (age 9 and 6). However, none of us were excited by much of the tour besides the gold panning. Our guide was enthusiastic but somewhat incoherent and didn’t seem to know what he was talking about. That wouldn’t have been so bad - he was nice enough and entertaining - but he talked for quite a while, so the tour ended up being much longer than it needed to be. Just not worth the fairly high admission. The mill itself was really cool, but we thought we’d see more of the tunnel and/or actual mining areas - my mistake here as I could have done more research and likely known this ahead of time. We had more fun and thought the volunteers at some of the nearby free sites (Dinosaur Ridge, Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum) were much more passionate and knowledgeable. Maybe it’s a tour that can be awesome with the right guide, but this one missed the mark.
