Arlington National Cemetery
A sobering reminder of the realities of war, the Arlington National Cemetery is a beautiful tribute to over 400,000 service members and their families buried there. Learn about the more famous tombs, like that of President John F. Kennedy. We’ll even explore a few surprising graves, like that of famed boxer Joe Louis. The cemetery is even home to memorials commemorating the disasters of space shuttles Columbia and Challenger. Along with a few carefully selected residents like Audie Murphy , your engaging guide will take you to the Tomb of the Unknowns where you may even witness a Changing of the Guard ceremony. Walk these hallowed grounds to learn how the home of Robert E. Lee, whose Arlington House we’ll visit, became one of the country’s largest national cemeteries.

We had a wonderful time at Arlington National Cemetery with Amanda as our tour guide. She was knowledgeable, respectful of military ceremonies and traditions and made everyone feel engaged. We had 3 generations in our group including a decorated Vietnam veteran. We were all very happy with our tour. It was a highlight of our time in DC. If you are lucky enough to get Amanda as your guide, you are all set. If you have another guide, be sure to ask him/her to tell you the story of Audie Murphy and to show you his gravesite. Bring a penny to leave on the stone!

We booked the Arlington Nat'l Cemetery Walking Tour (Semi Private) with the hope that an intimate learning experience with our school age children would help bridge a connection between their classroom learning and real life. Enter in our tour guide Tony Spadafora! He turned out to be the perfect guide for this tour; tastefully and respectfully offering a wealth of information on not so simple of content. He answered all of our questions with ease, a smile and was never in a hurry. One of the most impressive experiences was that of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He talked w/us in advance of entering the area to observe the silent zone, taught us about the civilian salute, and knew where the best viewing area was to be able to watch closely the white glove check for the oncoming guard. He educated on the variations of tombstones found throughout the cemetery, family burial plots, the Kennedy family plots, we walked part of the Arlington House estate that was open, and he introduced us to the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg plot. There is so much to learn on this tour.

Our guide seemed a little overly focused on herself and her experiences. She gave us some good background and was friendly.
