My spouse and I were in town to take one of our children to college and decided to make a “weekend” out of it. I have been to Arlington Cemetery a few times but this was my husband’s first so opted for a personalized tour.
Amanda was our guide and contacted us about 40 mins prior to let us know the meeting point and how to find her. We arrived early and chatted about DC, previous trips, her journey to DC. There were 2 other guests that originated from Florida and we were off.
The day was overcast that turned to rain but Amanda found opportune places to stop under trees to discuss upcoming sites, history and answer questions (we didn’t prepare for weather well). One of the other guests had a neighbor whose husband was a 4 star general and laid to rest in the Cemetery. They discussed and Amanda looked it up to find his location and said she knew of the area and would take us.
Amanda was a wealth of knowledge and her enjoyment of history and patriotism was apparent throughout. My spouse and I are Army veterans so we discussed our experiences in conjunction with her information and found her to be extremely genuine and respectful of the conversation, the Cemetery and the all around meaning of all that the US military has done. One could tell that many topics moved her and she shared personal experiences that cause her to become emotional.
We were taken to see all of the Kennedy grave sights, the various military memorials, special graves of pertinent individuals and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for a changing of the guard and a wreath-laying ceremony. She told us the best place to view the event (won’t give that secret away) and what to expect. After the ceremony, she discussed the Old Guard and the history as well as the rigorous process of becoming a Tomb Sentinel. As we walked, she told us about the grave makings, the marble, symbols, application process to be laid to rest, etc. It’s the most information I ever received on any previous visit I had.
Finally, she took us to section 7a where the other guest’s neighbor was buried. The grave marking spoke of his date of birth and death as well as his military rank, branch and awards. Within this section was an Astronaut from Apollo 14, numerous generals and statesmen and a boxer, The Brown Bomber (Joe Lewis), who served in WW II.
After 3 hours, we concluded in the Visitors Center where Amanda offer restaurant and transportation tips.
Overall, A+. Such a exceptional experience to learn and view a historic place with a guide who makes it over the top. Definitely ask for Amanda and pay the $-worth it!
