The concierge at the Alyeska Resort suggested Chugach Adventures as a tour company to show me around. Carson, an athletic young woman from Chugach Adventures picked me up in the morning at the Alyeska Resort and drove the van to the train station to meet the other tourists. There we ate lunch, croissant sandwiches, fruit and a bag of chips. Afterwards, we visited an Animal Conservation facility to see bears, moose, and other wild animals. Then we rode on the train from Portage to Spencer Lake, a very scenic ride with wild life and great natural scenery to enjoy. We took a bus from the train station to Spencer Lake; There we were given rain boots and life vests to wear before boarding the raft. Justin the raft guide pleasantly took very good care of our group of five tourists. I trusted his knowledge and experience as he navigated the raft across the lake. I saw large pieces of vivid blue ice from the glaciers as the raft motored across the lake. Once we reached to our destination, we got off the raft and walked on the glacier, Here we were joined by another group of tourists to walk on the awe inspiring glaciers. A baked Salmon dinner was waiting for us as we returned to the starting point on the lake. After the dinner we took a short hike to view the scenic beauty of the area and too soon it was time to take the bus to the train to for the trip back to the hotel. Another great day filled with the splendor that is Alaska.

This trip is such fun. You begin by arriving at the Whistle Stop by train at Spencer Glacier. Our guides took us by bus to the lake from the glacier. It is a great way to see a glacier up close and float among the icebergs as well as touch one. The guides are very safety conscious and make sure you know how to react is you fall overboard. After floating around and viewing the icebergs up close we began a float down the Placer River. You are served a snack while you float along on the river. It is beautiful and you forget that you are truly in the Wilderness. After landing we are picked up by the train for our trip back out.

This activity(Bears, Trains and Icebergs) was booked for us through a tour with Alaska Railroad. We took the train to Girdwood and were met by guides from the company who then took us by train to the Spencer Whistlestop. We were provided with a bagged lunch which was simple but delicious with a good portion size. The staff took care of everything, and rowed us out to the glacier where we got out and hiked for a bit. We were rowed back and Justin has a full dinner including baked salmon ready for us. The picnic tables had been covered in linens and he had created a centerpiece from nearby flowers. Dinner was well-cooked and delicious. One of us has dietary restrictions which were met with a smile and delicious alternatives. They had been told about the restriction ahead of time and were prepared. They took us back to the train, then on to the hotel. We highly recommend this and would do it again.
