Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour from Ketchikan

Overview
A MUST DO TOUR IN ALASKA! One of the highest rated tours offered along Alaska's beautiful inside passage.  Find out what life is like as a commercial fisherman from men who have worked in the rugged Bering Sea.  These guys are the real deal! On board the Aleutian Ballad, a boat that was featured on the Discovery Channel’s popular TV show Deadliest Catch, you’ll cruise through the calm, protected waterways of the Inside Passage with an expert crew, watching as marine creatures of all kinds are caught and hauled up on deck. Catch is then held in a live tank for observation before being released back into the wild. You’ll see king crab, box crab, octopus, rockfish, prawns and more, plus you may catch sight of other local wildlife like sea lions and porpoise.  This tour has also become world renowned for a spectacular encounter with eagles in the wild.

This was one of the best excursions we went on during our Alaska Cruise. From the moment we stepped on the boat the staff were very informative, personable and very laid back. Loved each of their own personal stories about their time In the Bering Sea Crab Fishing. Plenty of photo opportunities and time for hands on with the Sea Life and even some equipment. Watched as Bald Eagles swooped down for a fish feeding beside the boat. This was a very informative and enjoyable 3 hours on the boat. Do not worry if you get sea sick as the boat stays In protected bays and areas where the water was like glass. Opportunity to visit the onboard gift shop and purchase some crab to eat during the tour also. We are so glad we booked this tour. We booked direct with the Company for far cheaper than with the cruise line. We were docked right In Ketchikan with the boat just steps away from our ship. We had time to explore Ketchikan prior to our boarding for the tour. My advice is to arrive early to get a seat on the main deck for better viewing of the action. Easy to find and board. Do not hesitate to attend this tour.

What a fab trip we had on this boat, an amazing insight into the lives and work of the fishermen who sail the Bering Sea. The crew gave us their life stories as to to how they came to work as fisherman and then demonstrated how they brought and launched the pots. A range of various sea life was also kept in tanks and available to handle and look at close up. The boat was very comfortable and we sat undercover being educated and entertained by the crew who are prolific storytellers. Don’t let this ship sail without you, it’s one of the best tours we’ve ever had.

We took this tour as cruise ship excursion. From the moment we were warmly welcomed on board, we knew this was going to be a different type of tour. The entire crew were introduced and I watched as elderly or handicapped passengers were assisted individually to their seats. The respect and care was obvious. The boat is outfitted with relatively comfortable stadium style seats - roomy enough for my big butt. You'll be able to move about the boat during the tour to warm up, stretch, have a look at the aquarium or equipment, or visit the galley (some snacks and souvenirs are sold here) or use the bathroom. The gentlemen that did the talking were extremely entertaining - great stories both amusing and emotional. They have done this work and know their craft. You'll get to see various types of crab and fish, perhaps an octopus, the trap pulling and setting procedure, a whale might happen by, watch an eagle swoop in for frozen fish etc. The time will pass very quickly on this wonderful tour. Take lots of pictures and enjoy your time on board. By the way, the boat doesn't go out into rough water so don't worry about that.
