We set out this day for a bus tour as I love learning new facts about places, I have been on tours like this before in other countries and have loved the ease of them. This service in particular was awful! We bought our tickets from a big bus stand close to the US capitol building, I explained we only wanted the blue route, she told me it was $50 each. Fine I accepted bought the tickets and then asked where can we join this route expecting her to say a bus will be here soon. Oh no we had to walk 30 minutes to the nearest bus stop!? No explanation that the ticket she had sold us was for both routes even though we only wanted one because we didn't have enough time for both. Or any explanation that the buses were exactly the same and the only way to know what route they're travelling is to look in the front window for the smallest sign.
After guessing all of the above information we boarded the bus. This was the only part of our journey that was a success, tickets were checked, got headphones had tour information played - perfect. Until we got off at the next stop there was no information about bus times either in the leaflets we had or on the bus stop signs, we got told that the next bus would be 40 minutes at this stop. We ran round the shops, 30 minutes we got back to the stop, the bus had just pulled away. So we went back and got something to eat came back again 30 minutes later (given that we were told it would be every 40 minutes we thought we were being early) we had just missed another bus according to the lady in the big bus coat. We timed the next bus 15 minutes it took and it pulled up short of the stop so no wonder we'd missed the bus previously. It would have helped having someone with the correct information.
We got off the bus and back on one more time and it was a similar situation you had to guess where it was picking you up and what time. We then decided that we had more time on our hands than originally thought so we boarded the bus for the other route and our plan was just to sit and listen to the information. They had a live guide on this bus who was great, gave lots of information for 10 minutes until this bus pulled up and he said they need him on another bus - goodbye. After that no commentary was played through the headphones, no idea what stop we had got to - felt lost.
The annoying music was now getting on my nerves, no idea where we had got to. All of a sudden the bus pulls up the driver gets off. Its about 10 minutes before the bus emptied and we went to question the driver. He says there are no more buses the last bus was 5pm - it was 5.10pm and we'd had no information - we would have sat on that bus a lot longer if we hadn't of seen the driver leave.
It took 45 minutes to walk back to our hotel luckily we had a map handy. I will not be using the Big Bus Company again no matter what country i visit there are far better services available.
