Big Island Farms Tour in Hawaii

Overview
Big Island Farms is spread across 64 acres along the breathtaking Hamakua Coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean with panoramic views from Waipio to Hilo. The farm is carved into two large sections by the historic Hamakua canal which brings water from the pristine Kohala forest preserve and provides irrigation to the lower (makai) section of the property.
The upper (Mauka) portion, which is above the canal, of the farm is planted in organically grown Macadamia nuts and Kukui nuts (candle nut). The lower portion below the canal is a diverse collection of permaculture food forests, a variety of themed gardens, coconut orchards and living spaces for our Big Island educational programs. The gardens contain over 200 unique species of edible and medicinal plants including: Coffee, Banana, Papaya, Cassava, Taro, Ginger, Turmeric, Cacao, Avocado, Breadfruit, Coconut, Sugar Can, Sweet Potatoes, Kukui, Ti (KI) and a wide variety of Bamboos just to name a few.

I really enjoyed this tour. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable. I feel like I could have spent days/hours/weeks and only learn a fraction of the knowledge she has. It was very inspiring and I have already started thinking about the food forest I want to plant in my yard!

Exactly what we were looking for. Sinead gave a great tour of the farm from the permaculture perspective. She answered all of our numerous questions regarding the farm design/layout and strategies, cover crops, composting, natural pesticides, pollinators, sacrificial plants, etc. If youā€™re interested in regenerative farming and permaculture/food forests: this farm is worth the time!

Hello Brian! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us this wonderful review. We hope you apply the knowledge you gained here to your own garden or food forest and come back to visit soon!

Not local. You can see everything they have planted off the sides of the roads. Better off spending your time/money at the botanical garden or botanical zoo in Hilo.

Hello! We believe you are the same person to post an inaccurate review on Google as well, so weā€™d like to once again take this opportunity to give more details about the work we do. First off, if you had really come to our farm you would notice that we have bamboo all along the road so you cannot see anything on our farm from the main road? We are a small sustainable farm based in Honokaa. Our only goal is to restore the soil/ land by planting native and canoe species, grow locally and feed our community. We pay all our staff to do local community support twice a month, we help the Hamakua Community gardens and our local school garden. We also recently opened a small store at the front of our property where we sell our own grown produce, we also sell the Mauna Kea shawls and support Hawaiian charitable foundations by giving back all the profits for important causes in Hawaii. We also founded a few years back, World Sacred Gardens, which gives back every year to local programs in need of support, especially Hawaiian based programs. We prefer to put into action and educate then promote everything we do. But again, thank you for giving us the opportunity to share a bit more about our daily actions. You are welcome to come for a tour and see what we do. You could also come see for yourself that there isnā€™t much to see from the side of the road as you claim. If you have any other recommendations, please do not hesitate to contact us via email.
