Big Island Farms Tour in Hawaii

Overview
Big Island Farms is spread across 64 acres along the breathtaking Hamakua Coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean with panoramic views from Waipio to Hilo. The farm is carved into two large sections by the historic Hamakua canal which brings water from the pristine Kohala forest preserve and provides irrigation to the lower (makai) section of the property.
The upper (Mauka) portion, which is above the canal, of the farm is planted in organically grown Macadamia nuts and Kukui nuts (candle nut). The lower portion below the canal is a diverse collection of permaculture food forests, a variety of themed gardens, coconut orchards and living spaces for our Big Island educational programs. The gardens contain over 200 unique species of edible and medicinal plants including: Coffee, Banana, Papaya, Cassava, Taro, Ginger, Turmeric, Cacao, Avocado, Breadfruit, Coconut, Sugar Can, Sweet Potatoes, Kukui, Ti (KI) and a wide variety of Bamboos just to name a few.

They've got a lovely bunch of coconuts! And bananas, and mangoes, and many other plants both tropical and mundane. Big Island Farms was just about the "smallest" experience we partook in while visiting the island, but the rustic and down to earth walk around the farm was a complete joy to partake in. Our guide, Neal, was friendly, outgoing, full of knowledge, and eager to share the lay of the land, how they operate, what their plans are, and diverse other topics from the island itself to finding good food. The walk was fairly easy, and every few steps were new plants to look at with an occasional sample fresh from the field, or story of the varmints that roam around. At some points in the year the lush land should provide a much wider variety of samples, but as out of season as we were we still enjoyed a few tasty surprises culminating in freshly shelled mac nuts - which were a delicious surprise to someone who doesn't care for them. Overall, we really enjoyed the excuse to drive across the island and explore a little bit of tropics that we otherwise wouldn't have seen. We definitely recommend setting aside a bit of time and walking around Big Island Farms.

We loved our farm tour. We are frequent visitors to the Big Island and avid gardeners, and we still learned so much that we didn't know. Neil was awesome, answering our questions and laughed at our all our jokes. Highly recommend if you're into gardening, tropical plants, conservation, or just looking for a unique experience away from the usual tourist activities.
