Bioluminescence Kayak Tour

Overview
In the warm and dark lagoon waters lies a natural phenomenon of glowing blue waters alive with activity. The swirling of your hand, every paddle stroke, and the rolling wake off of your kayak all sparkle throughout the darkness. Not only do fish leave trails, dolphins look like torpedoes, and manatees a slow and graceful submarine. Many guests compare the experience to Pandora of “Avatar.” Some even recall the bioluminescence scene in “Life of Pi”  as the gentle plankton leave a trickling glow when you hold it in your hands and let it trickle down your arm. Though some may jokingly blame this on NASA runoff, it is actually the biological response of microscopic algae called a dinoflagellate. The perfectly natural and harmless concentration of organisms produces light before your very eyes, often existing in millions per liter of water. Your tour will include a ton of information about these rare and exotic creatures with the most experienced guides in the area

I booked the tour for my mom and I—I had seen some things online about the tours and wanted to go. It 100% did not disappoint! Our tour guide Jess was great and her excitement made the tour that much better! We had a great time with a large group paddling out to the canal to see the “Bio” as the guides call it. We passed by a ghost ship or two and we got to have some fun time seeing the fish dart through the water like lightening bolts. Jess even showed us some comb jellies and got some of mullet fish to jump for us! The tour was awesome and I am definitely making plans to go again! I think it’s great for a nature-lover, a kayak-er, or anyone who’s willing to put in a little bit of work (and paddling is work) to have a super fun and chill time.

I took my 7 and 15 year old children out with A Day Away for the dinoflagellate tour, and boy were we thrilled! The "bio", as the guides refer to it, was truly surreal! We kayaked down a gently channel to an inlet, where we we observed glowing jellies, leaping mullets, and Florida's beautiful nocturnal wildlife. There was no dangerous wildlife to worry about at all. Our guides were careful, vigilant, knowledgeable, and charismatic. A special thanks to Jessica, who took extra time to help my little one, the youngest on the tour, to experience the bio and learn about it's origin there. The river was amazingly quiet, and we did not have a lot of trouble with mosquitoes. That said, we may have gotten lucky that night; be sure you have bug spray applied, and carry extra, and go prepared to be soaking wet. Have a change of clothes with you in the car. When you receive the driving directions, they instruct you to pass the by the one-way gravel road that runs through Black Point Wildlife Refuge. However, I recommend you leave for the tour an hour early and drive the loop. It runs for about seven miles or so, and offers such awesome wildlife viewing that we were glad we accidentally drove through! The road actually loops back to the main road (glance over a map before you venture in). Bring your camera...so many gators and birds, and such beautiful terrain!

I surprised my husband with the Bioluminescence, clear kayak tour for our anniversary. It was amazing! We got to see Dinoflagellate and Comb jellies. The guides were knowledgeable and the pace was good even for inexperienced kayakers like ourselves. There were 13 boats, so we had 3 guides. They made sure no one got left behind and that everyone got to see the bioluminescence. They even had jars for the comb jellies so you could really see them up close. We caught several in our net and it was super cool to watch the bioluminescence through the bottom and sides of the clear kayak. We used bug spray and didn’t have a problem with being bit. Joseph and J.C., you made our night! Thank you also to Brandi, who I communicated with via email about the tour. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone! It’s a blast!
