Bioluminescence Kayak Tour

Overview
In the warm and dark lagoon waters lies a natural phenomenon of glowing blue waters alive with activity. The swirling of your hand, every paddle stroke, and the rolling wake off of your kayak all sparkle throughout the darkness. Not only do fish leave trails, dolphins look like torpedoes, and manatees a slow and graceful submarine. Many guests compare the experience to Pandora of “Avatar.” Some even recall the bioluminescence scene in “Life of Pi”  as the gentle plankton leave a trickling glow when you hold it in your hands and let it trickle down your arm. Though some may jokingly blame this on NASA runoff, it is actually the biological response of microscopic algae called a dinoflagellate. The perfectly natural and harmless concentration of organisms produces light before your very eyes, often existing in millions per liter of water. Your tour will include a ton of information about these rare and exotic creatures with the most experienced guides in the area

Like some of the other reviewers, it was a bit of a slow start, but once we were in the water, it was a great run. We got really lucky with weather and season and were able to see the Dino and Comb Jellys. I didn't even notice the Dino glowy water at first, but once it was pointed out, it was cool to see. The nets they provided made all the difference. The cloudy glow was so eerie. The comb jellys were like fire flies in the water. We also saw fish jumping out of the water. The clear boats let you see the water all around you. Flicking the bottom of your boat makes all these green lights flash like static on a tv. Bug spray is a must - I used some and still walked away with tons of bites.

We had an amazing experience overall! The tour guides - can't recall their names, but we'll just refer to them as Romeo and Juliet - were informative and friendly. After arriving at the drop in location, it took about 20-30 minutes to get everyone equipped with life vests, paddles and kayaks before we embarked on our adventure. There were several other kayak tour companies present as well at the same location, and it was a little confusing at first. Before we got into the water, the guides gave us a few tips for kayaking for those who were inexperienced and then we were on our way. Once we were out in the water, we immediately saw some comb jellies, which were just coming out of season, and also some of the dinoflagellates, which glowed green in the water. The entire tour took about an hour and a half out on the water. We definitely had a great time, and would do it again in the future.
