Overview

On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

We will walk over a mile on the tour in temperatures anywhere between 40-100F. Guests must be able to walk unassisted at a reasonable speed.

Had a day to kill in birmingham. Birmingham is not what you would call a tourist city so I wasn't sure what to suspect from this tour. Clay picked up the group in his van and drove us around the city. I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. Clay gave us a tour of the whole city that included it's history, politics and involvement in the civil rights movement. He gave detailed and interesting information on all parts of the city. It real and not sugarcoated. I have been on city tours before in bigger more touristy cities and this is by far the best on I have been on. This tour was an unexpected highlight of my trip.

I recommend anyone visiting Birmingham and interested in Civil Rights History to go on this tour. Red Clay showed genuine respect and honesty on Civil Rights topics. I appreciate how info and discussions weren’t sugar coated. God bless you!

The tour takes you through the history of the civil rights movement - and what let up to the civil rights movement. Many of the displays were items or events I remembered as a child, teen and even as a young adult. I think everyone should learn and in some way experience this part of our history - as unpleasant as it was.
