Overview

On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

To experience this church and learn face-to-face about what happened here on the morning of September 15, 1963. We even attended church service on the Sunday we were in town to visit the city. It was a beautiful service full of warm friendly people and I am so honored to have made this trip with my mother as we went across the South visiting major historical sites.

This was one of the best tours we've experienced. Clay has done his research and gave an unvarnished, detailed history of Birmingham's civil rights' struggle. He helped bring to life some of the events we've only read about and seen in those iconic photos and black-and-white newsreels. And Clay didn't only focus on the '50's and 60's; he gave us historical context from the Civil War on. We recommend you consider this tour when in Birmingham.
