History on Wheels Review of Birmingham Civil Rights Tour Clay's Birmingham Civil Rights Tour is one of the best tours that we have ever experienced. It gives the factual history of the city's struggle with civil rights during a difficult time in our country's history. Clay is knowledgeable, personable and ready to answer any question. It is not a standard sightseeing tour, but a journey through history. If you never considered visiting the city, Red Clay Tours is a reason to visit Birmingham. You will not be disappointed. However, if you happen to be in the area, you should take this tour.

Clay obviously has a passion around educating his guests. This isn’t a glossy, feel good tour but that doesn’t take away from its power. In fact, it strengthens the experience. The tour is thoughtful and exhaustive. It showcases how Birmingham has struggled mightily to own its history. It becomes easy to link the corruption, greed and denial to the present day issues this city, and many others, continue to face. Clay has carefully chosen locations that paint a complete and compelling narrative of this especially painful period in Birmingham’s past. He has painstakingly researched so many obscure details that help visualize the trauma inflicted on and experienced by all African American people trying to integrate this southern city. Trauma still palpable today by visiting many of his excellent site choices. I learned so much from this tour. I saw parts of Birmingham that I have never seen. I am forever appreciative of this experience. It’s important.
