This tour is an essential element of any civil rights tour of Alabama or the South. Clay has an inexhaustible knowledge and understanding of the history of conflict and heroism in the fight for civil rights in Birmingham. He has a knack for storytelling and introducing in layers the cast of characters around the Birmingham civil rights movement. He will connect you in a personal way to the lives and struggles of these individuals. The three hours feels effortless and by the end participants have a good understanding of the background to Alabamian race relations. It’s worth stopping in Birmingham for a day just to do this tour! We thoroughly recommend it and admire all that Clay is doing to contribute to a better future through a more honest and empathetic understanding of the past. Note that if you take the tour on Monday, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and 16th Street Baptist Church will not be open for viewing (the tour ends in front of both of these sites).
