Overview

On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

We will walk over a mile on the tour in temperatures anywhere between 40-100F. Guests must be able to walk unassisted at a reasonable speed.

16th Street Baptist Church

Learn about the role the church played in the Civil Rights movement in Birmingham and the history of the church bombing that tragically killed four little girls.

See where the march protests ended in Birmingham and learn about groups fighting for Civil Rights in Birmingham

My husband and I took the tour recently and afterwards both of us could only say "wow"! The whole tour was packed with information that everyone should take in. Clay is so knowledgeable and was able to make the 3 hour tour fly by. We live in Minnesota, and we are promoting it to all our friends, just in case they find themselves in Birmingham. Highly recommend it!

Clay gave an outstanding tour. His knowledge of the Birmingham civil rights movement as well as Birmingham history are impressive. While this is billed as a walking tour, it’s mostly driving and you get out at a few stops. It’s not all beautiful and everything is okay. You see the problems that Birmingham faced and faces. I recommend this tour very highly. His presentation is first rate.

Clay picked us up right on time and from the beginning to the end he did a great job teaching us about the history of the Civil Rights movement in Birmingham. The whole thing was incredibly moving and it worked well to combine this tour with a visit to the Civil Rights Institute afterward. All in all, I highly recommend this tour and if I'm ever in Birmingham again, will take another of Clay's tours.
