Overview

On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

We will walk over a mile on the tour in temperatures anywhere between 40-100F. Guests must be able to walk unassisted at a reasonable speed.

Clay Cornelius is a gifted tour guide - one of the best I've ever been with. He took six of us on his three-hour "Fight for Rights" tour that was informative, interesting and powerful. Clay is an amazing storyteller who helped us understand Birmingham's violent past and the courageous actions which helped bring about change. Clay also took us to many of the places in Birmingham where the key events took place. Clay's tour is reason enough to visit Birmingham.

Four of us -- two couples -- embarked on a week-long pilgrimage to civil rights movement historical sites. We finished up in Birmingham, where a highlight of the entire journey was Clay Cornelius' Fight for Rights tour. 3-hours of non-stop story-telling by a truly gifted teacher, someone who loves his native city, with all of its violent past and instances of extraordinary courage and leadership for change. He gave us an unvarnished, tremendously informative account as we moved with him through the city.
