Overview

On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

Mike was our guide and he was very knowledgeable and provided an excellent historical overview but also touched on today's events and their impact. It was great tour to do on the first day as it framed our visit. We highly recommend this tour! Communication was excellent! The start and finish of the tour is right by the church and the museum and we managed to visit both and highly recommend them.

I never knew that Birmingham such a tragic history in terms of the Civil Rights Movement. Mike did an excellent job of bringing the past events to life and adding his own personal touch to the tour. I'm especially grateful that my 12 year old was able to learn more about the civil rights struggle and how important it is for his generation to not forget and to make sure that the history of oppression does not repeat itself.
