Overview

On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

We will walk over a mile on the tour in temperatures anywhere between 40-100F. Guests must be able to walk unassisted at a reasonable speed.

Learn about the role the church played in the Civil Rights movement in Birmingham and the history of the church bombing that tragically killed four little girls.

See where the march protests ended in Birmingham and learn about groups fighting for Civil Rights in Birmingham

This was an amazing tour and Clay was an outstanding guide. Very knowledgeable. I would say this is a "must do" with Red Clay Tours if you are visiting Birmingham!

We highly appreciated the informed and well organized presentation provided by the tour guide. The guide was particularly adept at creating mental imagery which underscored critical events and strategies which were at varying periods of key drivers during the Civil rights movement.

My son had to work, so I went on the three hour Birmingham Civil Rights Tour by myself. Clay was friendly and professional and did a wonderful job sharing his city’s stories with our group. So much more history occurred in the city of Birmingham than I was ever taught in school. Clay took us to the actual homes and churches that were bombed. He made sure that we heard the history and saw exactly where it occurred. I highly recommend this tour!
