Black Bear & Wildlife Exploration - Ketchikan, AK

Overview
Ketchikan's finest bear viewing accessible by road! Visit Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary for this unique opportunity to see black bears in their native habitat. Your naturalist/guide will bring the rich forest to life as you meander along an improved trail, leading to an elevated boardwalk and platform system amongst magnificent stands of spruce, hemlock and cedar. Watch for bears from the safety of the raised boardwalks which maximize your viewing and provide protection. Leaving the private elevated wildlife viewing system, the rainforest trail transforms to an additional boardwalk perched over grassy wetlands alongside Eagle Creek, home to a rich run of spawning salmon. Here bears, bald eagles, seals and other birds come to fish for Alaska's abundant salmon. Be sure to visit the Alaska Raptor Center, a non-profit organization. Take the opportunity to see raptors up close, along with the historic Herring Bay Lumber Company Sawmill, master Native carver and General Store.

f you visit this place, you will remember it a lifetime. If you were ever a fan of National Geographic -- where you can see wildlife up close and personal -- then this is the tour for you. The salmon run up creeks along the Alaska coast to spawn. Actually, they swim, but they call it a "salmon run" for some reason. The salmon do not disappoint. They are there by the thousands -- up and down the coastline as far as I know. At the ARS, you walk along a wooden platform (don't run!), about 15 to 20 feet about the creek, at the terminus is a waterfall -- the salmon are trapped! By the thousands! The water is only a few inches deep. And, not to disappoint, Brown Bears (which outnumber humans, by the way, on that island) are feasting! Momma bears and her cubs walk through the creek and pick through the juiciest morsels, eating the parts they like and discarding the rest. (Yes, lots of dead, mutilated salmon fill the air with an aroma you have to experience -- not unpleasant when we were there.) Shout out to Mickie and Loki - our guides - they were knowledgeable, kind, protective, and were never annoyed at our inane questions. They protected our group like "bookends." (My video of bears catching salmon was too big to upload -- but amazing!)

Incredible experience seeing bears catching salmon in the rainforest. The salmon run was occurring, and we saw a mother bear and cub feasting on them. Brynn and Daniel were awesome guides, they had great jokes and answered all our questions.

The tour with our tour guides Loki and Tristan was just great: the walk through the rain forest was amazing. We saw lots of bears ā€¦ including mama bear with 2 baby bears. This this one of the best tours we did on our Alaska trip
