Gaslamp Quarter

Often called the Historic Heart of San Diego, the Gaslamp Quarter is the main dining and entertainment district of the city. With more than 150 bars and restaurants and 94 registered historic buildings, this nightlife playground has a lot to see and do, as well as a fascinating past. The Brothels, Bites and Booze tour will introduce you to the beginnings of San Diego as a port town – learn why it became one of the more notorious red light districts of its time, and find out how this once-undesired neighborhood became a fun and vibrant nightlife destination for both locals and visitors. After meeting your guide, you’ll embark on a journey of scandalous tales, unique cocktails and local cuisine. On the tour, you’ll make new friends, hear interesting stories, sing karaoke and explore new tastes at local restaurants*.

We always try to take a tour like this when we visit a new city, and this was the best by far. Our guide was both hilarious and knowledgeable and the food stops were perfect. We recommended it to all the people at our convention.

This tour was very thin on history and the food and drinks were nothing special. The guide seemed more knowledgeable of and interested in the current restaurant ownership groups than any specific history of places. (And very interested in presenting his own comedic material that had nothing at all to do with the tour.) The restaurants on the tour were fine but didn’t seem to have any cultural or historical significance. I wish we had chosen a different way to spend our afternoon.

I'm so sorry you had an unsatisfactory tour with us in the Gaslamp. It seems like the guide was the main reason you had a bad experience, and it's frustrating for us in management because our guides are trained for a while, and have all of the resources to conduct an insightful and interesting tour. I have spoken to your guide, and we have addressed your feedback. All of the restaurants we visit do in fact have interesting stories, and part of that is the restaurant groups of the Gaslamp. Unfortunately, there aren't too many "historic" venues that go back to when the district was built for several reasons we discuss on the tour, but they are local, and have a special place in the current Gaslamp Quarter. I'm sorry you didn't get the whole story, and if you ever come back and consider another one of our tours, I'd happily comp you 2 tickets to give us another chance. I had a lot of fun on this tour and it was a great intro to the Gas Lamp district. Mark is very funny and the alliteration joke was extremely creative. I cannot wait to take my friends to some of the restaurants we stopped at on this tour.
