Our snorkeling adventure should have been called off. It rained the morning of the trip so the water was very cold and the bay was rough. We couldn't go to Shell Island for safety reasons and ended up at a place with very few fish and a few hermit crabs. Only a few people got in the water. I was surprised that we only got a snorkel and mask and they had no fins, but we would not have needed them anyway the water was only about 2 feet deep. 1 and 1/2 hours of snorkeling and I saw a small stingray the size of my hand, one crab, and several not colorful fish - bluegill sized. The crew looked just as cold as we were and just as disapointed that they had to go out on a day like that. On the bright side we did see 2 dolphins in the bay before we got back to the dock.

This was what I consider a boat ride not a snorkel tour. It was a nice time though. The captain was very nice and knowledgeable. We went to Shell Island to snorkel but there is really nothing there to see. It is heavily visited by boat tours so no fish, no shells, just sand and short sea grass. We were in about 2 feet of water so no fins needed. It was laughable! However, we then went and found dolphins. Again, highly visited by tour boats, but we did see a few dolphins. I felt sorry for the dolphins because they were at times surrounded by boats. Overall it was an enjoyable boat ride but I wouldn’t do it again.

We saw dolphins for sure. But it’s not snorkeling to see oodles of pretty fish, as I have done further south in FL in the keys. It’s digging in the sand to unearth sand dollars and maybe starfish. Nice tour, kind captains and deckhands!
