I was very excited to take this tour but after we were a bit disappointed. I’m not overly into the paranormal but do enjoy a good ghost story once in a while. Either nothing unusual has ever happened in this cemetery or our guide knew nothing of anything. I believe our guide’s name was Tad and he was a very nice gentleman. However, we found the tour a bit boring. Of course, we knew it would be dark and the guide had a flashlight but it was small and didn’t illuminate much on the mausoleums, etc. Plus he only shone it for a minute each time so if you weren’t right there, you missed it. He did have some stories of the people buried there and did a great explanation of the Hunley for those that didn’t know the story. We ordered the book “City of the Silent” that the guide referenced. We plan to go back after reading the book and during the daylight so we can see the magnificence of this treasure. Definitely use the bug spray, lots of bug spray.

We hear you, laudb, loud and clear, and we're working on it. We love Magnolia Cemetery and consider ourselves lucky beyond measure to have been given the privilege of conducting nighttime tours there. It is a historic wonderland of silent mysteries, but also a place of modern interment, so we have been working on the right balance between narration and respect. Sounds like there could have been a bit more narration on your tour. Also, your suggestions with regards to the lighting are immensely helpful and we are modifying the tour accordingly. We will definitely work on that. Many thanks for letting us know. It is a tremendous help to us.

Overall, I was disappointed. The tour guide (a young lady with architectural background) was very versed in her stories and I don't blame her except that she missed the mark by just telling the story, which seemed a tad long at times. A little more theatrics and quoting in first person occasionally would have punched it up some, rather than just telling a story. The tour crept toward boring, Surely Charleston has lots of interesting tales to choose from. I would leave out the one about the murderer couple who was hanged or at least not end with that one. Conclusion was weak. I would punch up the one about the young girl who was placed in the mausoleum. This could have been a home run if done with more suspense or interaction with the guests - maybe guessing "what do you think happened next?" or "and then . . . and then . . . . Again a little more than just a matter of fact story. I do feel that the three in my party could have spent our $87 better than this bland tour. Money lost. Bottom line: Bulldog needs to revamp this tired tour.

Margaret, this one hurts us to the core. We're very sorry that the tour fell so short of expectations. However, your comments are thoughtful and constructive and we can tell they're coming from a place of good intentions. You have given us plenty of food for thought. Rest assured, we're taking your feedback to heart and we are working with your guide to improve her delivery. Please contact Randy Johnson, our Guide Manager, at [email protected], to arrange a refund. You have a discerning ear, for sure, and we greatly appreciate your taking the time to let us know. It helps us immensely.
