Have you ever had the feeling, when you booked a certain trip or tour, that something special would come of it? That’s how I felt yesterday when I booked my tour with COA. There was only one slot open for the titled Charleston Marsh Eco Boat Cruise that also stopped at Morris Island Lighthouse. First, the professional.
Upon meeting captain Joey, I knew we, the passengers, were in good hands. His informal demeanor, pleasant and laid-back behavior made it easy to ask him questions throughout our tour. You could sense his passion with nature through his teaching and relaxed knowledge that poured forth unscripted. We saw pods of resident dolphins while he explained the family dynamics, intelligence and much more of these creatures. I learned the importance of the 10,000 plus oysters in the area and their role in the eco-system. Even the beautiful Spartina or cordgrass that was seen throughout our trip, is an important pollution filter.
My head buzzed with so much information as we zoomed along the waterways. Captain Joey showed patience as he waited for the dolphins to move around and away from the boat or when we approached certain waterways. Even with the brown pelicans that hung out in the area, there was something interesting to learn of. But the best moment happened when he had taken us to Morris Island to have free time to collect shells.
Captain Joey was so in tuned to my love of the Morris Island Lighthouse through our conversations of it as well as the two cameras that dangled from my neck, that he went one step further. He offered to take me to a sandbar close enough for me to shoot pictures at a distance from. I felt like a kid on her first field trip! All alone, I gathered numerous shells, some incredibly large, as I made my way to the southern side of the Charleston Harbor entrance. The 161 ft. tall building, the largest lighthouse in South Carolina became close enough to photograph. I felt as though I had my own island; me, the ocean, the lighthouse, the sky above and God. It was the most incredible feeling that will never be repeated. As an author, I gathered information for my next book and as an amateur photographer, I have pictures that will make my heart swell at the sight of them. The kindness and thoughtfulness of Captain Joey is what makes him the coolest guy I’ve ever met!
Conclusion: I highly recommend using Charleston Outdoor Adventures. I plan to try my next challenge, kayaking, with this company.
