Matthew at Chicago Private Tours gave our extended family a fabulous tour of Chicago this past weekend: Informative, entertaining, lively, honest, passionate, encyclopedic, relevant …
At the start of the tour, when Matthew introduced himself to each and every one in our group, he set the tone for the tour: thorough, on-the-ground observations, calibrated for us, with a great deal of sensitivity, and no clichés. A few examples: (1) Most tourists would yawn, tune out, or look confused when hearing about the pre-historic geologic history of Chicago. The way Matthew explained it with references to Canada and the early native Americans (& even to the Green Bay Backers), he made us sit up in rapt attention! (2) On the spot, when we asked to visit some of the older neighborhoods where the early Eastern European immigrants had settled, Matthew worked with the driver to incorporate it, and then proceeded to explain not only that slice of Chicago history but also how such neighborhoods came to relate to present-day demographics. (3) We have been to the Magnificent Mile so many times, but only now, after our tour with Matthew, did we understand the real business underpinning behind this development, beyond the glitzy marquee brands: It was an “aha” moment for us! Bonuses: many, many explanations and insiders’ tips about Chicago local culinary traditions, where to find the best offerings, and what culinary faux-pas to avoid!
Like other reviewers had commented upon, Matthew was very attentive to those with physical needs and always made sure our 86-year-old mother was comfortable getting in and out of the minibus. BTW, the minibus is very clean and comfortable, and our driver drove skillfully and carefully.
Our extended family on this tour included a high schooler, practicing and retired physicians and other professionals, people from the Midwest and from both Coasts, seasoned international travelers, and everyone else in between: Every one of us was just blown away by how fun and informative our tour was. The 4 hours just flew right by and we were still hungry to see and learn more!
Speaking of more, here is the “… and more” part: One member of our group discovered 1 hour after the tour ended that she had inadvertently left her phone on the minibus. Our frantic phone call to Mike (owner) was answered promptly. Despite being out of town, Mike quickly coordinated things so that Harold from the company actually personally made the trek to our event venue to hand-deliver the phone to us –in person, with a smile, within 2 hrs. of our panicked phone call.
Thank you, Matthew, Mike, Harold and everyone at Chicago Private Tours for making our tour with you one of the highlights of our family gathering this past weekend: So, so very memorable and worthwhile.
