I recently signed up for the Night Tour of Chinatown and North Beach in San Francisco. Our tour guide -- John -- was tremendous! He was very courteous and professional, and knew so much about the neighborhoods that we visited. We sampled (many!) teas, had dim sum, and then finished up the evening with wine & authentic roman pizza -- doesn't get any better...It was a very enjoyable time!

While we are SF locals, we took visiting relatives on the Night tour of Chinatown and North Beach during the Holiday weekend. I hoped for much, given the reviews. Overall, as a tour, I was not impressed. Our guide was nice enough (he usually does the Beat museum tour), but I was hoping for a more informative tour on the history of both Chinatown and North Beach as we sampled good food. Instead we felt like we were just led from stop to stop, with only a few historic facts thrown in along the way. First stop was a hole-in-the-wall Chinese bakery where we got a plate of cold dim sum samples. For anyone who's had dim sum before, this was not impressive (or apppetizing). Then we stopped by a fortune cookie factory for 2 minutes where they had already shut down production that day. We did get a sample of a flat cookie and a souvenir bag for fortune cookies to go. Then it was off to the highlight of the trip (I think I have the order correct), which was a tea tasting (Ital Tealeaf?). Here our group sat for almost an hour tasting maybe 10 types of Chinese teas, all the while learning a great amount from the host, Jason. Fascinating. Finally, we trudged off to North Beach where we got a couple of pieces of tasty pizza and a small glass of wine as the guide left us to finish. I suppose if you've never been to SF or had dim sum this might be worthwhile as a very cursory introduction. But you might be better off stopping by any restaurant serving dim sum for lunch and visiting the tea shop for a tasting. Perhaps the individual tours of Chinatown or North Beach are better.

We really enjoyed the San Francisco Combo Night Tour. The food was great, and it was one of the best San Francisco experiences we've had. We enjoyed not only the tasty dim sum, and artisan pizza, but also all the historical and cultural information about San Francisco's North Beach and Chinatown. We'll go on another tour with them next time we are in San Francisco"
