Adventure through Shell Key Preserve in your 100% clear kayak! See crystal-clear water, diverse marine life, and the underwater world below your clear kayak.

You’ll paddle along mangroves, enjoy white sand beaches and sandbars, and explore a secluded beach. If the tide is high, your guide will lead the way through a hidden mangrove tunnel. Shell Key Preserve is located in Tierra Verde, FL near St. Pete Beach in the Tampa Bay area.

Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, manatees, pelicans, crabs, and more while enjoying the preserve’s picturesque mangroves, beaches, and sandbars. Be on the lookout for a manatee or the beautiful pink Roseate Spoonbills in the summer months. White Pelicans call the sandbars of Shell Key Preserve their home during the winter months! Throughout the year, dolphins frolic in the crystal-clear waters and cormorants love to swim alongside your kayak. Chances are that you’ll see a variety of wildlife, but sightings are random and not guaranteed.

The Kayak tour was a fun and unique way to explore the area. This tour went through a variety of different habitats---a stop at an island with crystal clear waters and a close up look at the mangroves. (It was amazing seeing the root system of the mangroves up close). Ben, the tour guide was both engaging and knowledgable about the wildlife and he seemed to know where to stop to see it. There was a wealth of wild life---turns, egrets, herons, and white pelicans. Although this trip is an investment, it's definitely worth it.

This didn’t live up to my expectations and I really should have known better. You can’t see much in the water, clear kayak or not. You’re only on shell key for about 15 minutes which doesn’t have much to it. And if you’re not right by your guide you can’t hear anything they’re saying. A lot of money for something you can do on your own.

Thank you for your feedback. The water does progressively get clearer as we near the Gulf of Mexico, and some of the common items that we we see below the kayak include sea grass, conch, jellyfish, cormorants, and the white sandy bottom. All of our tours are about 2 hours long, and we do stop on the beach for about 15 minutes. Shell Key is known for the beautiful variety of shells and the picturesque views of the Gulf. We do also recommend that you stay close to the guide both for safety reasons and to be within earshot so that you can hear about the diverse ecosystems and wildlife on the tour. We strive to give every guest a five star experience and to set accurate expectations by showing photos and descriptions of the tour on our listing.
