It was on out Bucket List to return to Williamsburg w/o young children. So We purchased a 2 day ticket for Colonial Williamsburg. Unfortunately we were so disappointed at how many of the shops and tradespeople were closed or not present. It was mentioned that the shops were so small they could not accommodate 6 feet of clearance b/w visitors, but I am not sure why they just didn't limit entrance. Know that you can walk around the reconstructed town w/o a ticket but that a ticket is necessary for the Governor's Palace (which is lovely but small...20 minute tour), the Capitol building (which was closed for us), and the museums (which were very nice...but not appropriate for children). We also learned that none of the taverns/cafes in the historic section were open on a Monday or Tuesday...only the bakery. The bakery had small snack plates of prepackaged meats and cheeses, cookies galore, and pretty great coffee and cider. We are glad we went but only really needed 3 hours. Until VA loosens up, a 2 day pass is a waste of $$. Really disappointed .

People were in character in some of the buildings and discussed things as they were in colonial times. The price has not been adjusted; however, not all of the buildings were open due to COVID. I do plan on returning when things are open. I would recommend coming early and be ready to walk. We arrived around lunch time and did not have time to get to all of the buildings even with the reduced number that were open.

Colonial Williamsburg is a painstaking recreation of American life shortly before the Revolutionary War. It features a mix of restored original buildings, and faithful recreations. Local actors offer tours and perform as historical figures. For me though the highlight is definitely the expert craftmanship showed by the various tradespeople on site practicing the art of colonial manufacturing. You can watch experts ply their trade as gunsmiths, jointers, weavers, blacksmiths, seamstresses, etc., and then buy those same goods which they produce. Even with COVID a remarkable amount of Williamsburg is still available to tour, although the wait times to view the governors palace was pushing 2 hours during my visit. At the visitors center signs everywhere warn you "it's almost impossible to do it all in one day", but with COVID restrictions my wife and I were able to see and experience everything in about 8 hours (including that 2 hours wait for the palace).
