Unfortunately, our cruise got delayed about an hour because of a boat that caught fire on the other side of the water. Sadly I found out on the internet that a family of 4 was on that boat. The wife and one daughter got out okay but the husband and other daughter suffered burns. I hope they are doing better now. Otherwise, this was an excellent cruise from Valdez Harbor. We sat outside on the bow of the boat so we could get some good pictures. It got cold at times but well worth it. We saw lots of stellar sea lions. We got really close to the Columbia Glacier. It was amazing how the captain navigated through the floating ice. We really enjoyed the Stan Stephens Cruise.

The 7 hour narrated boat trip to the Columbia Glacier was a spectacular experience. The crew on the boat was gracious, attentive and helpful. If you get to Valdez, take this cruise. Sea mammals, sea birds, bald eagles, sapphire colored icebergs, the awesome glacier face up close to view calving, history, science, environmental exploration... great opportunities for photo taking throughout the entire trip. Reservations are handled easily and staff is responsive to questions. The boat is big enough to feel safe and comfortable, but small enough to deftly maneuver through the ice field. Overall a wonderful experience whether you are alone or with friends or family. We met some delightful passengers from all over the world and the feeling on the boat was friendly and relaxed. This glacier is rapidly retreating. You should go now!

Our tour group went on this cruise in June 2013 when Alaska was experiencing a massive heat wave. Needless to say we did not need any scarves, hats nor heavy clothing. Due to this weather we had great views the entire time we went to see the Columbia Glacier from Whittier to Valdez. Like others we saw orcas, dall's porpoises, otters, seals and a bald eagle. There was plenty of ice floating in the water, but we only got 5 miles from the glacier. It did not seem very tall to me from our vantage point. The whole idea of floating in all of that ice was so surreal, so enjoyable, so peaceful! We got to see some salmon fishermen with their nets too. Loved touching the piece of ice that was floating in the gorgeous water! The chicken dinner we received was nothing special, but it was a hot meal. We didn't really expect much on such a small boat anyway. All was good.
