Comb Jelly Bioluminescence Kayak Tour

Overview
In the cooler Florida months, bioluminescent Comb Jellies congregate in the protected waters of the Indian River Lagoon. Living in the most bio-diverse estuary in North America, Comb Jellies are clear, glob-like creatures that, despite their name, do not sting! So as you paddle the calm waters laced with mangroves and palm trees, you can catch and hold these gentle glowing creatures. They're right at your fingertips while having a safe, awe-inspiring kayak adventure with those who share your enthusiasm for new and unique experiences.

In addition to the stars, the myriad of protected wildlife around you, and the Comb Jelly’s bioluminescence, their “ribs” are lined with cilia that they use to propel themselves, so when you cast a flashlight on them just right, they’ll also refract a dynamic rainbow-y light show! They’re right at your fingertips while having a safe, awe-inspiring kayak adventure with those who share your enthusiasm for unique experiences.

We did the 2 hour bioluminescent jelly kayaking tour. They called me a couple days in advance telling me they weren't seeing any jellies in the area I had booked and offered to switch me to the Merritt Island launch point, which we did. The comb jellies light up when disturbed so the guide would find where they were and then we could find them ourselves with our paddles and nets they gave us. They are very cool as I have never seen anything other than lightning bugs actually light up. The guides had jars that we could put them in to see how they would look underwater. I might only suggest that they shave off about 30 minutes since I think we had our fill after 1.5 hours. But, it was still a great tour and I would definitely recommend it.

If you're looking for something other than the theme park experience when visiting Florida, this is what you need to do. Never having kayaked, I was pleasantly surprised how easy it is to paddle, navigate and stay upright in a kayak. Our guide Brian was quite knowledgeable about the habitat and creatures in the area and made the trip safe, fun and interesting. Being able to see these glowing creatures in our hands and in a jar was just breathtaking. They're fragile and beautiful and plentiful and so unique. The whole experience was just wonderful to spend time with the natural world of Florida.
