Creole Louisiana: A French Quarter Walking Tour

Overview
Join us for a walking tour of New Orleans’ most historic neighborhood, the French Quarter. See the “Vieux Carré” through the eyes of the Louisiana Creoles who originally called it home. Louisiana is unique amongst the various regions of the U.S. The intriguing tales of notable creoles (of West African, Native American and European origin) will illuminate the development of the culture that distinguishes Louisiana from the rest of the American south.

This tour is an exploration of old Louisiana, the Louisiana that gave birth to Jazz and Zydeco, to gumbo and jambalaya. Louisiana is technically a southern American state, but culturally Louisiana has always been the northernmost part of the Caribbean.

(This tour includes a tour of the courtyard of a beautiful antebellum French Quarter residence and normally of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, though the cemetery is currently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.)

This tour, which I took in English, was the highlight of my New Orleans trip. The tour guide (Lawson) was a wealth of information, and really brought this complex and fascinating history to life. The stops were well planned, and the tour balanced historic personalities with architecture in a way that was both entertaining and educational. The focus of the tour is on the Free People of Color and Creole history, and is worth taking for that reason alone. But I also think that these groups were/are so integral to the history of New Orleans, that I felt like I walked away with a fantastic sense of the city's history as a whole. I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in learning more about this amazing place!

my young nephew and i took the french quarter tour in english on 7-20-19. it was an insightful overview of the many aspects of the ethnic and cultural mixture that evolved to make new orleans unique among american cities. the tour covered both the architecture of the city, important historical figures, and emphasized the contributions made by the creoles of color. the highlight of the tour was the tour of st. louis #1 cemetery, which is not to be missed. the tour guide, lawson, is a skilled story teller, who weaves a compelling historical tour, both entertaining and informative. remember, new orleans is a tropical city, with frequent rain storms, but the tour goes on rain or shine. the heavy rain actually added to the experience, you can always buy ponchos just about everywhere in the french quarter. overall, a wonderful tour, not to be missed.

Very interesting visit. The opportunity to see places inaccessible without this visit and to see known places differently. An opening also to the Creole language and culture.
