Creole Louisiana: A French Quarter Walking Tour

Overview
Join us for a walking tour of New Orleans’ most historic neighborhood, the French Quarter. See the “Vieux Carré” through the eyes of the Louisiana Creoles who originally called it home. Louisiana is unique amongst the various regions of the U.S. The intriguing tales of notable creoles (of West African, Native American and European origin) will illuminate the development of the culture that distinguishes Louisiana from the rest of the American south.

This tour is an exploration of old Louisiana, the Louisiana that gave birth to Jazz and Zydeco, to gumbo and jambalaya. Louisiana is technically a southern American state, but culturally Louisiana has always been the northernmost part of the Caribbean.

(This tour includes a tour of the courtyard of a beautiful antebellum French Quarter residence and normally of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, though the cemetery is currently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.)

A great introduction to the heart of New Orleans past and present, creole culture (now often called 'cajun'). Mostly focuses on important sites and events from pre-20th century, but its implications on 21st century New Orleans (and even the U.S. as a whole) are eye opening. We took the tour in the pouring rain and still thoroughly enjoyed our 2 hours - I actually was hoping it would go a little longer so I could hear the history to present day. IMPORTANT NOTE: Tripadvisor listing mentions St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is part of the tour, but sadly the Catholic church has closed off the cemetery to a single monopoly tour company, shutting out all others including this one.

The tour and our amazing guide Laurent helped us to experience New Orleans food, culture and history. We traveled through the city and discovered things we would never have found on our own. The food was delicious and the stories and gracious way this tour is set up is a must when visiting New Orleans.

I loved our tour guide. He was knowledgeable and kept us in the shade as much as possible. He also gave us a great food recommendation.
