A wonderful introduction to The National Gallery of Art — its history, several select pieces from its collection and interesting aspects regarding some of the artists. Not a wasted step as we strolled through the Building reflecting, learning and laughing. Tosca had a great way of informally sharing facts and details about select works that had us discussing them afterward all weekend.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of early Italian Art and Art of the Netherlands in the National Gallery with Tosca. We are two older adults, professionally scientists, who have been to the National Gallery many times (as well as other major art museums in Europe) so we needed someone with some depth and Tosca definitely was that person. We looked at a mix of well-known must see's as well as some lesser known works that either Tosca or one of us was interested in. Because there were just two of us we could ask many questions - some of them quite unexpected I'm sure - but she was fully capable of answering everything whether it had to do with historical context, cost, preparation or availability of materials,, methods, the religious and social context, commercial aspects, symbolic or technical oddities that were understood in the past but not clear to a viewer in the present, the use of various symbols and identities of various persons or locations depicted, what was known about the artist, how the paintings were paid for or displayed, or passed along over the years, and how that affected what ended up on the canvas (or other material). When we stumped her with one question she researched it and sent us some references afterward. It was like going to the museum with a delightful and articulate friend who also happened to be an expert. We plan to return to see other parts of the museum with her in the future.
