Captain Pete and our tour companions were great! What a great way to see and learn about Daufuskie Island -past and present, see wild life, enjoy time on the water and to spend the afternoon. I highly recommend this tour. Ask for Captain Pete! He is delightful and very knowledgeable! My mother, Sister-in-law and I had a fabulous time. You are not rushed, but you are not bored either. Great tour! Take it! PS yā€™all need to add another category below. ā€œFamily, without the Kids!ā€ Ha ha.

Captain Doreen made this a must-do/must-see trip! Her knowledge of Gullah history, her story -telling and her personal relationships with Daufuskie residents make this a very special and personal trip. Be aware however, there are few Gullah people living on Daufuskie (12) and you will NOT interact with any of the people. Stories are told from a white person's perspective, not a slave descendant. Captain Doreen also knows the plants, birds and marine animals of Hilton Head and because of her sharp eyes we got to see rare shore-feeding behavior of the local bottle nose dolphins. This was one of our best days of vacation. Thank you Doreen!

I think overall it was a nice experience, my tour guide was super nice, and knowledge and lovely. I went to lean about the Gullah community but it was all told from a completely white point of view. All of the artisan businesses were also white, my tour guide was white, and we interacted with no one from the Gullah community or a Gullah business. I understand that the Gullah community keeps to themselves, but we didnā€™t actually get to support the actual community or get a good understanding from their point of view. Also, at one point the tour guide was talking about the only female slave owner on the island and how she was a ā€œgood slave owner,ā€ there is no such thing as a good slave owner. Slavery was utterly atrocious, I donā€™t care if she didnā€™t sell off other human beings to other plantations, she purchased human beings for sale that were forcefully removed from their homes, packed like cargo on ships and forced to work in South Carolina. She was not good, and words matter.
