I really the appreciate the maximum effort Captain Pete puts into this tour, and he did a wonderful job getting the group around the island and telling the story. Now that I know that you can ferry over there and tour at your own pace and see whatever you want, I would have preferred that over the tour mostly of vendors. We actually never went to the historic side of the island rather stayed around the center where the vendors were. The only stop we made with nothing to sell was the African Baptist Church. The boat used is quite small and not covered and the ride can get quite rough. Not my favorite trip but okay.

Hi dt_zak: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am sorry that The Daufuskie Island History and Artisans Excursion did not exceed your expectations. While your feedback is appreciated a few points of clarification: 1. This Tour is the only Tour to Daufuskie that only explores the historic (undeveloped) side of the Island. The Tour arrives at The Heart of The Historic District, Daufuskie Landing. This is the site of what was the only General Store on The Island and where Pat Conroy arrived daily to teach school. While other Tours do arrive and explore what is locally referred to as "The Developed Side" this program is designed to focus on history and art. 2. The only spots that the tour stops at where their is an opportunity to purchase times is at the studios of two local artists: -Iron Fish . This is the studio of Chase Alan. Winner of Martha Stewart's American Made award. -Silver Dew Pottery: The studio of Lancy Burn. 5th generation Islander, his grandfather and great grandfather were Daufuskie lighthouse keepers. The pottery designs are inspired by native American pottery found on Daufuskie. Included in other historic stops where there is no commerce are: -The Mary Fields School where Pat Conroy taught during segregation -Several grave yards, including Gullah and European. -Bloody Point Lighthouse site -House of Blue Shutters -Mid wife and undertaker cottage -and many more. We are quite proud of captain Pete Barbano as he is considered a leading history authority on Daufuskie and as you can see from may reviews is lauded regularly. Again thank you for your review and we hope you will possibly go to Daufuskie again either on this program or our daily water taxi service, private custom excursions, or do it all on your own boat rental program. With appreciation,

Our guide Pete did a great job. The boat ride over to the island was fun and scenic, and our time on the island was a real adventure. I loved Peteā€™s stories, his knowledge of the islandā€™s history, and his clear respect for the residents - past and present.
