Never been to Charleston before this one day excursion. Learned very quickly that squeezing it all into one day isn't the best idea as it really did not provide enough time to appreciate any one thing. The carriage ride would have been immensely improved if the driver/guide had a microphone since much of what he said didn't make it to the back row. I give the carriage ride a ā€œPoor" rating. An hour to "shop" was barely long enough to a get cup of coffee. The fact that the AC on the bus had been turned off during the carriage ride resulted in a very uncomfortable ride to our next destination. I give that part of the trip a "Terrible" rating. The dash through Fort Sumter was just that - a dash that did not allow time to visit and fully appreciate this part of our history. I give Fort Sumter visit a "Poor" rating. The visit to Boone Hall Plantation again was time constrained but I give this an "Excellent" rating based on the 30 minutes spent with Jennifaye bringing to life the Low Country as only one who personally experienced it could. The Butterfly Garden was also stunning. At the end of the day it was frustrating that the last people to be picked up were not the first to be dropped off. The bus driver insisted that her "backroads approach" was the most time efficient but being the last man standing on the bus after a long day was not expected nor appreciated. I guess the best thing that came out of this daytrip was adding a trip to Charleston to my bucket list.
