Days of Steam

Overview
Pulled by an authentic, historic California Steam Locomotive, you can step back in time while you enjoy a scenic 7-mile round trip along the beautiful Pudding Creek Estuary – home to blue herons, ospreys, egrets, and more. This trip departs from our Fort Bragg depot, and takes one hour and 15 minutes round trip, with a stop at Glen Blair Junction. Travel authentically the way it was…

This 7-mile roundtrip takes you over the first tracks laid down by the California Western Railroad, and along the beautiful Pudding Creek Estuary. Returning to our roots, this steam locomotive mirrors the locomotive that originally ran on these tracks in 1885. Pulling original authentic passenger cars of the era and an open-air car, step back in time to the Days of Steam amongst the towering Redwoods.

Everyone in my family is a train lover, so we thoroughly enjoyed the Skunk Train. It is relatively short, just a bit over an hour roundtrip, so young kids can participate as well. Our favorite part was being on board an historic train in a lovely, wooded area. We also enjoyed the drive to Fort Bragg, the stores and restaurants available there, and, of course, the Pacific Ocean. We were also very happy that they honored our tickets, although we had mistakenly booked our trip for the previous week!

The ride was a fun adventure and the redwoods were amazing. It was nice to be able to get off the train for a short stop to take pictures.

The staff were all very courteous. It was absolutely overpriced. The ride was way to short. Walk in the redwoods at the stop was pleasant. Open car was fun except that the droplets of steam were falling all over us. We did this ride about 15 years ago and it was longer. Even our 5 year old grandson asked “is that all?” We won’t recommend this to others because of the cost vs time ratio.
