This trip is nothing that requires an off-road vehicle or experience, just driving in a Jeep with a group down the A4 (Parks Highway) to get to Route 8 (Denali Highway), then several miles eastward into the countryside and back again. The tour operators hype it up a bit, claiming that you’ll likely see wildlife along the way – which actually is a near impossibility as these routes a heavily-traveled public access roads, with much of the surrounding land native owned and open to anyone and everyone who would want to camp, hike, hunt or fish – not places where wildlife would be likely to hang out at all! Truthfully anyone would be far, far better off to spare the $170 per person charge for this tour – assuming you truly wanted to drive these routes in the first place -- it's pretty much a sure thing you could easily rent a car for significantly less than $150 for the half-day and drive this route entirely on your own. You'd still need to answer the bigger question -- Why?
