Denali National Park
Instead of the big bus tours, explore the park your way! Take a selfie at the park sign, explore the Denali National Park Visitor Center, tour historic buildings, venture down hiking trails, and visit the park’s own sled dogs at the Denali kennels. Traversing the  the entire accessible road to the Savage River affords views of Denali (Mount McKinley) as well as frequent sightings of moose, caribou, bears, and a myriad of other critters. Expect a 40 mile round trip which allows extra time for exploring the park’s attractions.
3
Denali Highway
Before the “new” highway between Anchorage and Fairbanks was finished in the 1970’s, the Denali Highway stretching from Paxson to Cantwell was the only way to reach Denali National Park by road. Still just a seldom-traveled gravel roadway today, it is renowned for picturesque alpine landscapes and untouched wilderness. This scenic byway was recently ranked #2 worldwide as the “Drive of a Lifetime” by National Geographic Traveler magazine. Besides the ability to view Denali (Mount McKinley) from numerous points, travelers will likely see wildlife along the route. Expect an 80 mile round trip.

What an absolute scam! They provide you with a guide book with destinations that cannot possibly be reached in the 4 hour limit. We rented the vehicle, checked everything out on it before we left and got on our way. We immediately headed towards the old Denali highway to see what was there. We saw some places to pull off the road along the way, approaches and the like so that we could be out of the way of the traffic. We also pulled into a few different camping locations to go to the bathroom, then once we had about an hour left we turned around and headed back to return the vehicle. The guide was there waiting for us, we collected our things and he said we were good to go. There was no checkout done, I had assumed that when he said everything was good it meant just that. A few days later we get an email saying that we damaged the vehicle and there were severe scratches on both sides and the hood and were demanding we pay $1400 for damages. They refused to provide any kind of pictures, evidence or proof of damage or an invoice for the body shop that had to do the repair work. They claimed that we went off their established roads, there was nothing saying we couldn't pull off onto approaches or into camping areas. We certainly didn't take that little POS jeep off roading to non established locations. There is nothing in their visitor guide that you couldn't see with any normal rental vehicle, save your money and save yourself a scam. If you are there on a tour bus and don't have your own vehicle and want to rent something to drive around in for the day on paved only roads that are approved ahead of time by them, that's probably ok. Do yourself a favor and take documented pictures and video of the vehicle before and after your trip and make sure the guide signs off the inspection sheet and gives you a copy before you leave or you may be in for a scam email just like us.

We had a terrible experience with Stampede Excursions. I would really question their safety practices and quality of service. Not recommended.

Hands down the worst experience I have ever had with a tour operator. Not only was the service terrible, but the company is unethical in its practices. When the terrible weather was clearly unsafe and offered zero visibility, they forced the tour to move ahead anyway. Despicable. Would strongly encourage tourists to look elsewhere - there are many other options.
