Destrehan Plantation Tour

Overview
Located just 25 minutes from New Orleans and 10 minutes away from the New Orleans International Airport, Destrehan Plantation is the oldest documented plantation home in the Lower Mississippi Valley. It is also the only plantation accessible by rideshare or taxi. Our tours are rich in political, social and economic history. After the tour, guests can view a folk-life demonstration, visit our 1811 Slave Revolt Exhibit, explore the grounds, picnic under a live oak tree draped in Spanish Moss and shop in our Plantation Store for unique hand-made items by local craft artisans. We are handicap accessible and kid friendly!

Perhaps less known than other plantations and probably the closest to the city of New Orleans, Destrehan Plantation was a really interesting stop on our trip. Our guide, Emma, was extremely kind, competent and thorough in telling us the history of the place, its evolution and the lives of the people who lived there. Learning about the history of the settlers, the living conditions of the slaves and the peculiar history of slavery in Louisiana was definitely interesting and I greatly appreciated both the guided tour and the time available for the individual visit.
