During my trip planning phase, I did all of the jeep tour research for my friends and ended up picking the Diamondback Trail (at sunset) as the best trail experience for a young, adventurous group like ourselves. My top choice was to ride with Safari Jeep Tours. Then, my friend who stepped to plan when I got busy with work ended up switching it to Pink Jeep Tours, even putting a deposit down. A debate between us ensued.
He was sold by the fact that Pink Jeep was the biggest operator and was more expensive, assuming their higher price meant greater quality. I countered that from my own research, the tours looked to be the exact same but Safari Jeep Tours offered a greater value and, from my conversations with them, would be more flexible in not rushing our party back to the base since, as a smaller and locally owned outfitter, they didn't have the same, strict corporate timetables as Pink Jeep. We could have a bit more fun stopping for pictures and scenic, impromptu overlook spots.
In the end, my friend reluctantly withdrew his deposit from Pink Jeep Tours, even though they offered us a last minute 10% discount, and we were all so glad we ended up choosing Safari Jeep Tours once our excursion ended. In retrospect, here are the top 5 reasons we made the right call on the Diamondback Trail and Safari Jeep.
1. Why Diamondback? I looked at Pink Jeep Tour's Broken Arrow Trail and I confess that "driving on red rocks" initially seemed really cool, but if you hike Cathedral Rock the views are better and it's more fun to climb up red rocks with your hands than in a jeep. Plus, by hiking the red rocks you really feel the vortex energy. So, from my perspective, I wanted a jeep tour that was a bit more "road less traveled" but extreme. I learned that the jeeps of either company are equipped with $15,000 worth of suspension equipment, so I wanted a trail that would put that gear to good, rugged use. Diamondback did not disappoint. There were so many places I could tell our rental SUV would've become high centered and/or quite cosmetically damaged.
2. It's the same trail whether you're riding it with Pink Jeep or Safari Jeep. In fact, I felt really vindicated when my friend, who originally wanted to go with Pink Jeep Tours, saw the Pink Jeeps passing us on the same trail we took with Safari Jeep. Pink Jeep customers got ushered along while our group of 9 got to leisurely take tons and tons of awesome videos and pictures amongst ourselves. With Pink Jeep, we would've paid more for the same experience.
3. Lea, our tour guide, was fantastic. She was really informative, awesome, fun, and energetic. We even got to keep beers in the jeep's cooler (attached to the jeep's front grill) and drink them throughout the ride. So many times we'd look through the front windshield and be staring right at the ground because the angles of the roads were so steep. However, with the high quality suspension system of the jeep you never once feel in danger. It feels very safe and secure. The tires are deflated a bit so the jeep really hugs the ground and you never feel as though you're going to tip over.
4. The number of stops we made were great. There were four stops we made to get out and either take group pictures or send up a drone (so that we could have it follow our jeep as we navigated the more technical parts of the trail). Technically there were five stops if we count the liquor store pit stop for beers. Of all the scenic spots we stopped, only one of them was a stop made by the Pink Jeeps. At the other spots, we just saw the Pink Jeep tours drive by us as they ushered people along. Meanwhile, our group got to take fun jumping pics, take pics of us climbing on and jumping off of the jeep, and really take in the scenery as thunderstorms rolled through the land. It was epic.
5. Cost. To make a long story short, at the end of the day, we paid less with Safari Jeep Tours, spent more time on the trail, and got an extremely personalized and unique experience for our group. We couldn't be happier.
Safari Jeep Tours is the only company doing jeep tours that is still locally owned and operated. Not only were we happy to support a local business, but they really gave us an experience that a corporation could not.
