It appears this show requires you to have a sense of humor and not be a stick in the mud to appreciate it. Being neither of those, we thoroughly enjoyed the performance. I was wary at first as the set up was smaller than I'd anticipated and wasn't quite sure what to expect, but once I let go of any pre-judgement and opened up my mind, the hilarity ensued. Sure, there are some crass jokes peppered throughout (this is where not being uptight comes into play), but overall the improvisational aspect really impressed me. The NY show is held in a comedy club so that should give you the first clue that there is lots of laughter involved. I loved the audience participation, and yes, through it all, you do get the gist of the play--the night we went they performed (Drunk) Macbeth.
The setup includes one of the actors having a few shots the beginning (and even into the performance) and as the audience can also imbibe, this just added to the laughter, for me. Seeing the poor soul get inebriated and attempting to improv and remember his lines was funny! It takes skill to think on your feet, be funny and perform a soliloquy.
Drunken Shakespeare was like a cross between Whose Line is it Anyway, Drunk History and Macbeth. If you're looking for a unique NY experience that isn't your typical Broadway show, this is it! Cheers to the team of Drunken Shakespeare.
