Nowhere else in California can you drive your vehicle on a public beach, so take advantage of the unique opportunity to cruise down the scenic Pacific shoreline before you get to speed, zoom and zip your way along miles of Pismo's popular sand dunes. This 2-hour dune buggy experience includes all safety gear and instruction as well as a dunes support team to help you on your adventure if you get stuck or need assistance!

What To Expect

Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area

Rent your dune buggy in Oceano, just 5 minutes down the road from Pismo Beach, at your selected time. Get fitted with your gear and receive a safety orientation. You will then hop on our complimentary beach shuttle which will drive you a mile down the beach to the OHV staging area. Hop in the driver's seat or passenger's seat of your fully automatic, Big Paddle Tirer Dune Buggy and zoom off through the Oceano Dunes.

So must of us were new to ATV and Dune Buggy riding on the dunes.... The staff is super helpful and will make a great deal with you and make you feel comfortable. We had a guide take us on the dunes and show us the ropes. The best way to do it - other wise we would have been too nervous. We had fun going down the faces of these huge walls of sand... super scary but we did it!

As first timers to the Dunes, we rented from Sun Buggy due to the availability of a 4 seater Dune Buggy. The staff was helpful, courteous and professional from the first clueless phone call to the shuttle ride back to our car. They told us where to go, where not to go, and what/who to avoid. The buggy worked flawlessly and we had no problems whatsoever. There seems to be a lot of competition for ATV rentals out there, but Sun Buggy seems to the 'the place' for multi-seaters. They set us up for a great day out there and we would rent from them again, especially now that we know what to expect out there.

A friend made a reservation for 12 of us during the middle of the week. We did an early part of the day which gave us the best deal. The folks here are the KINDEST people around! Matthew drove us (and 'Nana' at age 83) out to the sand dunes and the pick up location, all the way being careful not to get too bumpy for Nana! He even took a photo of our group before we began our adventure! At the helmet/goggle trailer Tony, Jeff, and Nick were the most helpful. The wind was intense and sand was just blowing everywhere so they let us set up our chairs (and pulled out their own picnic table) behind the trailer so that we could be as protected as possible. They fit us all (kids too) with helmets and goggles then had a 'driver meeting' to go over the maps and safety information. In addition to ensuring our understanding of safety and how the buggies worked, they were just plain nice. They told us about how long they had been with the company, why they chose it, etc. AND, while Nana was waiting for everyone, they sheltered her inside so that she didn't get a sand facial! So sweet! My opinion is that this is one of the safest operations on the dunes. Beware of other drivers, but Sun Buggie is non-stop fun, with a focus on safety! I highly recommend them should you want to try dune buggy or ATVs.
