East Zion Checkerboard Overlook Jeep Tour

Overview
Our favorite tour to recommend with the most bang for your buck! See two iconic Zion landmarks in a 1 hr rugged Jeep tour. First we wind through the pine forest reaching a stunning view of Checkerboard Mesa. Next onto a rugged descent of several hundred feet into Jolley Gulch where we make our second stop. Here you can take an optional two minute unguided hike to see a top down view of the Jolley Gulch slot canyon that reaches 200 feet down into its narrow canyon walls. We then climb our way out, crossing the the river bed several times as we work our way back on top of the Ponderosa plateau and back home.

We booked this Jeep excursion as part of our honeymoon. The weather cleared nicely for our morning tour with Mark, where we were the only ones on that trip. Mark was a great guide, having grown up on the resort he had tons of interesting facts about the area, as well as the various subjects we chatted about on the drive. The drive itself was very rugged, but offers some great views over looking the Checkerboard Mesa in Zion Park that you can't get from within the park boundary. After some more rugged off roading, we reached our 2nd stop at Jolley Gulch, where Mark had brought some welcome snacks as we ventured on the short walk to the gulch on our own (in keeping with the no guided tours within the park boundary). We spent about 15 minutes here, looking over the gulch before we headed back to Mark and the Jeep, and began our trip back to the resort. A great tour that set us up for exploring more of Zion Park that day, thanks to Mark and everyone we saw at Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort, who made our short visit so great!
