We spent a lovely morning venturing upcountry Big Island and visiting the Bees Farm, located a few miles south of Kona.
After a ten minutes informative video, the friendly and professional bees-keeper showed us all the secrets about 'his' queen, the worker bees, the puppies and of course the male bees: do you know that the males do absolutely nothing in the hive ?? apart from pleasing the queen and paying it with their own life.
We were behind sort of a protection glass, while the bees keeper was surrounded by thousands of bees… and he was just wearing a mask!! He picked up and showed us some bees - using only his bare hands. There were a few occasional bees on our side of the protection, but we were instructed that they would not bite us, as long as we didn't shout or make sudden movements.
We also visited the bees museum and the gift shop, where we could sample various kind of delicious honey, my favorite being the Ohia Lehua. My husband gifted me a lovely t-shirt with their beautiful flower logo on it.
Highly recommended.
